City of Tonawanda

The Common Council’s four new members were assigned during a reorganization meeting Wednesday night to act as liaisons to various departments.

1st ward Councilman Charles Gilbert was assigned to act as the council’s liaison to police and finance; 2nd Ward Alderwoman Jackie A. Smilinich was given Parks & Recreation and Schools; 3rd Ward Alderman John J. Hall was given Fire and Engineering/Land Sales; 4th Ward Alderwoman Jenna Koch was assigned Public Works and Finance.

Council President Carleton R. Zeisz said the assignments are a new approach to improving communication between the council and city departments.

Also this week:

• The Board of Education will host a budget advisory team meeting on Tuesday, 6 p.m., at Tonawanda High/Middle School, 600 Fletcher St. A regular meeting of the board will follow at 7 p.m.

• The city is in the midst of a nearly yearlong process of updating assessments on its more than 6,500 properties. Assessor Dave Marrano will hold a public information session Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall to answer questions on how values were developed and the process homeowners will follow if they disagree with the new value.
