Melanie Hannon of Cheektowaga split four matches Friday and was eliminated during match play Friday at the North Pointe Junior Gold Bowling championships being held in the Detroit area.
Hannon qualified fifth after posting a 20-game total of 5,016. She defeated No. 12 seed Ashley Bell, 432-403, lost to No. 13 Erica Schneider, 408-367, defeated No. 3 Elise Bolton, 421-389, in an elimination match but lost to No. 8 Emily Eckhoff, 409-344, in another elimination match.
The former Maryvale High bowler who is headed to Fairleigh Dickinson University started slowly in the girls U20 division of the tournament with a 934 (186.8 average) on Monday. However, she followed that with five-game rounds of 1,000, 1,068 (highest of the day), 1,035 and finally 979. A total of 2,078 youth bowlers competed in the four divisions of the Junior Gold Tournament at six Detroit-area facilities.
