A U-Haul truck carrying about $2 million worth of gold and silver rolled on its side against a guardrail on the eastbound side of the Thruway in Cheektowaga about 9 a.m. Monday.
The driver, a government contracted transporter, was not injured, according to State Police. The expensive materials were inside of large cores – described by police as similar to mechanical filters – used in industrial military aircraft. These materials are extracted through a recycling process, police said.
State troopers have not released the driver’s name.
After the driver’s credentials were verified, all of the material was safely recovered and transferred to a different vehicle. Troopers had an armored truck assist in offloading the metals.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
The truck rolled over between the Depew exit and Exit 50 to the Niagara Thruway. The left lane of the Thruway near the accident was closed while the truck and its contents were secured.
