A motorist who led Cheektowaga police on a high-speed chase on Christmas will spend 30 days in jail.
Randall W. Smith, 29, of Orchard Park, was spotted behind a business on Walden Avenue at about 11 p.m. last Dec. 25, according to a police department spokesman. When questioned by Officer Jeff Filipski, Smith took off in his vehicle, leading police on a brief chase during which multiple vehicle and traffic laws were broken.
Smith was found the next day and charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, obstructing governmental administration, reckless driving, and multiple, vehicle and traffic violations. He pleaded guilty to the reckless driving charge, the spokesman said.
In handing down the maximum 30-day sentence last Wednesday, Town Justice Paul Piotrowski told Smith that the jail sentence was necessary because of the potentially serious danger he had posed to other motorists, pedestrians and police, the spokesman said.
