DUNKIRK – Dunkirk City Council members Tuesday unanimously authorized the Town of Dunkirk to act as lead agency to create a water district in the Roberts Road area of the town.

Department of Public Works Director Tony Gugino called the action a “win-win” for both the city and town. He said the project is being financed by the Town of Dunkirk and will add more residential customers who buy water from the city. Residents of the Roberts Road area have had difficulty obtaining quality water from their wells.

The Town of Dunkirk has applied for grant funding to extend water lines to the residents in the Roberts Road area.

In other matters:

• The city will be working with the Chautauqua County Land Bank to try to demolish abandoned houses in the city. Mayor A.J. Dolce said the county program may result in the demolition of from 10 to 20 houses next year.

• Business owners along Central Avenue between Lake Shore Drive and Third Street have been invited to a meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Fredonia State College incubator to talk about improvements that could be funded under a Main Street Grant program. The mayor said $250,000 was awarded to the city for the improvement program.

• Leaf collection is expected to begin next week. Gugino said that paving projects in the city have been completed and that his crews will shift to leaf removal as soon as Monday.
