DUNKIRK – Several accidents this afternoon in the city of Dunkirk prompted Police Chief David Ortolano to urge people to stay off of city streets as much as possible.

“I think Dunkirk and Silver Creek have been in a pocket of snow for quite some time,” Ortolano said. He said the city has received several inches of snow today and that driving conditions are difficult.

The warning prompted Dunkirk schools to cancel all evening and afternoon activities.

Superintendent Gary Cerne said School was canceled last Friday as another major storm hit early in the morning in Dunkirk.

Cerne said tonight’s cancellation means that the school’s holiday concert was canceled and will be rescheduled for Thursday. The weather cancellations are causing problems with scheduling athletic events, the superintendent said.

After-school and evening activities at Silver Creek also were canceled today. Silver Creek students had Dec. 11 off due to the weather. The regular School Board meeting ,which was on the calendar for the snow day, has not been rescheduled. Board members are scheduled to meet next on Jan. 8.
