FREDONIA -- There will be a rally to support the workers of the Carriage House Companies on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Barker Common park in Fredonia.
The event is being coordinated by local union representatives. Mayor Steven Keefe said the village board gave permission to the unions to use the local park for the rally. More than 400 jobs at the Fredonia food processing plant are expected to be lost over the course of this year.
Keefe said that the actual shut down date for the facility has not been determined. The impact on the local economy has already been felt as Fredonia calculated that it will lose about $2 million in revenues from taxes, water and sewer fees. The village announced layoffs throughout departments and raised water and sewer rates at its last meeting.
ConAgra, the parent company of Carriage House, purchased the business a few years ago and announced the closing earlier this year. ConAgra also closed the Petri Baking products company in Silver Creek in 2013. There were 256 full time jobs lost when the facility closed.
