FREDONIA – The Pomfret Town Board on Wednesday night heard about solutions to the problem of low water pressure for the residents of Webster Road.
Representatives of Wendel Engineering said a permanent pumping station to increase the pressure whenever there is higher demand for water was estimated at about $78,000. Other temporary solutions, including individual pumps at residences, also were mentioned.
It was noted that Chautauqua County Health Department officials would not approve of the smaller residential pumps on the system.
The firm’s representatives said that there is adequate pressure for fire protection at hydrants but that some residents experience low pressure in showers and in appliances.
The Village of Fredonia will be asked to approve a change in the system as it supplies water to residents in the Webster Road area.
It was informally agreed to start talks with the mayor of Fredonia and start legal documentation to add the pump station and increase water pressure.
The board enacted a local law that will require back-flow prevention devices to be installed on homes that are connected to the municipal water supply. The local law is required under state Health Department guidelines. The devices will be checked whenever new water meters are installed or a meter is repaired.
A request for $10,000 toward the salary of a Fredonia police officer to be a resource officer at Fredonia schools was tabled. It was noted that salary would have to be charged to residents of the town who live outside the village limits. This also would place the taxing costs on those residents of the town whose property is in another school district, including Brocton or Cassadaga.
A resolution asking Chautauqua County to enact laws prohibiting hydraulic fracturing and the transportation of “fracking” waste was approved by a 4-2 vote. Board members Ann Eckman and David Penharlow voted against the resolution.
Following an earlier public hearing, the board approved a resolution to allow property taxes to be set higher than the state tax cap limit, if needed. Penharlow voted against the resolution.
The board will seek letters of interest for a new member to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Letters should be left with the town clerk.
