Town of Hanover Historian Vince Martonis will present a program on “Chautauqua County Curiosities” to members of the Town of Evans Historical Society at 7 p.m. Monday in the Evans Historical Center on Route 5.

Among the featured items will be a fiddle made from the skull of a horse that is believed to have belonged to Amos Sottle, first settler of Chautauqua County.

Martonis will also talk about Mark Twain, county connections with Sears, Roebuck & Co. and stories of the Underground Railroad as well as the wreck of the Steamship Erie in 1841 near Silver Creek. Many items connected to the stories will be on display.

Martonis is a retired college professor and avid history collector. He has been the Town of Hanover historian for more than 20 years.
