FREDONIA – Upgrades for energy improvements, a new phone system and repairs to the village gazebo were all approved by members of the Fredonia Village Board at the regular meeting Monday in the village hall.

The energy improvement project will begin with an energy efficiency study by Wendel Energy Services LLC of Amherst at a cost not to exceed $240,000, and will include a comprehensive energy audit. The program is funded by the NYS Energy Research and Development Authority at 50 percent.

The phone system for the village was proposed by the DFT Company of Fredonia and will include new telephone sets and wiring as well as voice mail and messaging for village employees and the police department. The cost is $8,274 for the installation and wiring. Monthly charges will be $1,064 to the village.

The repairs to the gazebo will be done by the Fredonia Rotary Club. The club members built the structure and donated it to the village in the 1980s. The new project will include a roof, new railings and paint. The gazebo is located in Barker Commons in the village.

Also at the meeting:

• It was announced that the local Beaver Club donated a large outdoor movie screen to the recreation department. There will be a free movie at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Russell Joy Park in the village.

• Village board members approved a quote from Diefenbach Water Systems of Silver Creek of $6,918 to install back-flow prevention valves on the water system. The valves are required by the Chautauqua County Health Department.

• Mike Comerford, a member of the board of assessment review, told board members she was aware of several requests by large companies for reduced assessments. She said reductions in property tax bills create larger bills to other residents.

Comerford urged board members to consider not replacing positions when people retire in order to save money through lower salary and benefit costs.
