DUNKIRK – The city’s Festivals Committee held its first meeting of 2014 Thursday in the Dunkirk Planning and Development Office.
Assistant Director Lacy Lawrence, who conducted the meeting, said the committee will be seeking new ideas this year, especially in the areas of children’s activities, parking, and marketing and advertising.
She said the schedule for summer events includes some changes. There will just be one day for the annual Wreck and Roll Festival on Saturday, July 5. Last year, the festival was two days.
Lawrence also said that the Mayor’s Office will be asking for donations and coordinating the July 4 fireworks festival. This was combined with summer festivals last year, and Lawrence said it was confusing to sponsors,
The opening festival is a family-friendly event called Picnic at the Point, scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. May 25 at Point Gratiot.
Summer music on the pier in the city starts June 12 and continues each Thursday evening, starting at 6:30.
Lawrence said bands are booked for all but two of the Thursday evening free concerts.
Dunkirk’s festivals are sponsored by local businesses and community organizations.
