DUNKIRK – The Dunkirk Local Development Corp. appointed Peggy Szczukowski on Wednesday to the new position of coordinator for the summer farmers’ market program.

The appointment will require her to establish a regular group of farmers and help select a site for the city’s market.  Szczukowski will be assisted by the Chautauqua County Health Network, which has established a $10,000 grant to fund the market. She also will work with Planning Director Steve Neratko. 

Neratko said he hopes the market will be equipped to take coupons issued to senior citizens and the EBT cards issued by the state. 

He said he is in talks with the owner of the vacant lot on the 300 block of Central Avenue and thinks it could be a good location for the market. 

A start-up date has not been established. The goal is for the market to run for 12 weeks.

In other business, the Local Development Corp. agreed to a bicycle repair station.

The bicycle repair station will be situated near the city’s boardwalk and will be staffed by volunteers from the Spoke Folk organization. The nonprofit group promotes bicycle riding and safety, and it will do minor repairs on bicycles for free. It will use a small portable shed that was purchased by the Chautauqua County Health Network.
