MAYVILLE – The contract between the village of Silver Creek and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department for enhanced police services has been approved by the county Public Safety Committee.

The committee members met Wednesday to discuss items that will go before the Chautauqua County Legislature next week.

The contract for $377,652 between Silver Creek and the county will allow for four full-time officers and two part-time officers to work around the clock in the village. The deputies have been covering police services since June.

Silver Creek Mayor Nick Piccolo asked for the services when the local department had difficulty filling shifts after the loss of several officers to other departments. The terms of the contract are for one year. Legislative approval is required. The village is required to supply fuel for sheriff’s patrols.

In another matter, committee members approved accepting $4,385 from the U.S. Marshal’s Office for police services in June to identify high-level sex offenders. The program, called “Operation Jumping Fish,” allowed for local police to track sex offenders in Chautauqua County and provide information to the marshal’s office. Funds were used to offset costs for deputies to track offenders and report on their residences and recent actions.

Committee members also approved several items for emergency services. Richard Jones of the state Department of Transportation was named to the Disaster Preparedness Commission.

Emergency Services Coordinator Julius Leone asked that an additional $2,895 be added to revenue in the emergency services budget. He said that amount was received from the Office of Homeland Security to help recruit volunteer firefighters.

Committee members also approved a revenue increase of $68,982 that Leone said went for equipment. He said those funds also were received from Homeland Security. The funds will cover the cost of cameras, fire investigation and other equipment.

Revenue from the Erie-2 Chautauqua Cattaraugus BOCES was also authorized by the committee. An amount of $35,257 will be added to the Sheriff’s Department Budget to cover the cost of a supervisor for the culinary arts program at the county jail. Some inmates are given the opportunity to participate in the BOCES culinary arts program while at the jail.

Public Defender Nathaniel Barone asked that the Public Defender’s offices for Family Court matters be moved to the Family Court building owned by the town of Chautauqua. Barone said that the current offices in the Gerace Office Building are not as convenient to the Family Court. He said space would be available Jan. 1.

Chautauqua County Executive Gregory Edwards said committee members should reserve decision on the move until further details about the costs are available. Edwards said that the public defender’s office will need to provide the cost of moving the office as well as set-up costs for computers and phone lines. The contract for rent at the former Mayville High School would be for $700 a month. Funds for the rent are provided through a grant from the New York State Indigent Legal Services.
