A rescue exercise for Chautauqua County first responders will be staged Feb. 22 on the frozen waters of Chautauqua Lake near Lakewood Community Park. The simulation will involve the premise of a small commercial jet crashing into the lake after take-off from Chautauqua County Airport, with the aircraft breaking apart and being partially submerged.
Personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard, Lakewood Fire Department, state agencies, WCA Hospital and other partner agencies will take part in the exercise, which will test coordination of emergency response and practice cold weather and ice rescues.
The simulation, which will involve ice boats, helicopters and ambulances, is expected to take about four hours. Traffic on East Terrace Avenue and a portion of Lakeside Boulevard will be rerouted that morning and ice fishing and other winter activities are discouraged near that area during the event.
