Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk will continue its affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center at Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pa., a hospital spokesman said Friday.
Brooks’ board of directors unanimously reaffirmed the relationship Thursday amid questions over whether Brooks should align with another hospital system, such as Kaleida Health, or attempt to operate without the support of a larger institution.
The board reached the conclusion that Brooks, like many other smaller and rural hospitals, can’t go it alone, according to Terry Dunford, a hospital spokesman.
He said that the board plans next to continue a strategic planning process focused on steps the hospital should take to remain financially healthy.
The Lake Erie Regional Health System, which included Brooks and the TLC Health Network, affiliated with Hamot in 2012. But TLC filed for bankruptcy last year, and Lake Erie Regional revealed that it had lent TLC $3.7 million in 2013 from Brooks.
