Torrential rains this evening in some parts of Western New York south and east of the metro area have prompted several flash flood warnings issued by the National Weather Service.

The weather service posted one for southwestern Genesee County and northwestern Wyoming County running through 12:45 a.m. Friday. Radar estimates showed that up to three inches of rain fell in a small area in the towns of Bennington, Darien and Alexander with an additional inch or two expected through late evening.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall was expected to cause flooding of small creeks and streams and country roads as well as nearby farmland.

Another flash flood warning was issued for northwestern Cattaraugus County until 11:30 p.m. The weather service said radar showed “a narrow band of torrential rainfall from a slow-moving area of thunderstorms.” Estimates that 2 to 3 inches of rain fell from Conewango to New Albion and Otto, the weather service reported ,with up to an additional inch expected this evening.

A line of heavy thunderstorms dropped about a half inch of rain over downtown Buffalo between 6 and 7 p.m., drenching concertgoers at the music festival at Canalside. The concert went on as scheduled.
