LITTLE VALLEY – The website www.HistoricPath.com is a Cattaraugus County history lesson at your fingertips.

The website, part of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s “Paths Through History” economic development initiative, debuted online Thursday. County historians have been meeting with Crystal Abers, director of economic development, tourism and planning, on ways to expose the historically rich county.

During a recent committee meeting of the County Legislature, two historians discussed how the website has been developed over the past 14 months.

Sid Edmunds, of Lyndon, and Sue Cross, of Mansfield, said they are still assembling the history that could draw more tourists to the county.

“We are working on histories from every township,” said Cross, a retired teacher.

Edmunds said the site is promising because it offers a window on the county’s rich history and gives historians an active role in strengthening communities.

“This (website) can only get better. This is just the beginning,” he said. “It’s a great site for people around the country and the world to see the historical significance of Cattaraugus County.”

Abers said the website has drawn notice outside the area.

“What we have been able to do has made many in the rest of the state, as well as in the region, take notice,” Abers said. “They are trying to emulate what we are doing. We are not done, however. Next year we will be working on some other great ideas.”
