LITTLE VALLEY – Residents of Cattaraugus County’s two public nursing homes are getting a lift, literally, with action taken Wednesday by the Cattaraugus County Legislature.

Legislators approved expenditures for training and equipment for the nursing homes, including the purchase and installation of lift equipment costing $64,220.30. Another $21,000 will be spent to train on the use of the equipment, which is used to move patients with disabilities.

Installation of the new equipment has been going on for months, according to Legislator Paula J. Stockman, R-South Dayton. Director of Nursing Homes Timothy Hellwig said training is nearly complete, and the installation should be finished in six to eight weeks.

“Everything in the process has progressed nicely,” Hellwig said. “What we are seeing is a continuation of the training we are already doing.”

In another issue, the Legislature approved spending $25,332 in contingency funding to purchase electronic tablets for all 21 members of the Legislature.

The issue generated some acrimony and approval was not unanimous.

“I feel we could be spending this money in other places,” said Legislator John Padlo, D-Olean. “There are a lot of department heads that don’t have these kinds of things that could use them. I will be voting no on the resolution.”

Padlo was joined by four others in opposing the purchase.

The devices will be purchased through a contract with Computer Discount Warehouse-Government, of Vernon Hills, Ill.
