After an impressive performance in winning the Western New York State Championship, the Lou Gehrig Red Iron Horsemen 10U team from Amherst is headed to next week’s Middle Atlantic Regional of the Cal Ripken Babe Ruth Baseball in Colonie.

Lou Gehrig went 5-0 in the Western tournament last week in Jamestown, outscoring the opposition 75-5 in wins over Nunda (13-1), Mid-Lakes (13-0), Holland (11-0), Camillus (21-4) and Ithaca (17-0).

Conner Hoehman, Kyle Finn, Josh Quartley, Conor Murphy and Johnny Armento did the pitching for the Iron Horsemen. Mitchell Floccare got the attack rolling with a grand slam in the opener.

The Lou Gehrig team, coached by Joe Hoehman and assistants Terry Finn and John Armento, will compete in the regional against championship teams from Eastern New York, Metro New York and host Colonie as well as Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

BASKETBALL: Timon-St. Jude High School is hosting a camp July 22-25 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The camp will concentrate on fundamentals and include games daily. The cost is $75. SOCCER: A camp run by current members of the varsity soccer teams at Iroquois High School is back for another run. The second annual camp starts for girls on July 22-26 and for boys on July 29-Aug. 2. Times are 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the EMW Fields on Seneca Street (adjacent to Sahlen Sports Park). The cost is $95 per camper. The high school players also referee locally, so they know what is needed to prepare modified or JV players.
