A 33-year-old ex-convict from Alexandria, Va., was formally charged Tuesday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office with the federal offense of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Varapong Ruengvivatanakij has been in custody since he was arrested by Customs and Border Protection officers Sunday as he was trying to come back into the United States from Canada at the Rainbow Bridge. He was arrested after a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun was reportedly found in the trunk of his car. His criminal history was not released by federal officials pending further proceedings in U.S. District Court in Buffalo.
