The man who was rescued from the ice near Erie Basin Marina this morning has been taken to Erie County Medical Center, said Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield.
The incident was reported at 9:25 a.m. when the man was spotted down on the ice near the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park. Whitfield is not certain whether the man, who is believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, fell or jumped over the safety railing.
Whitfield said two 16-foot roof ladders were used to reach the victim, who did not break through the ice.
“He was placed into a Stokes rescue basket and lifted to safety,” said Whitfield, adding the man’s injuries did not appear to be life threatening.
A Stokes basket is a metal-mesh stretcher used to immobilize and rescue injured victims.
Personnel from Buffalo Fire Department Rescue 1 and Ladder 2 assisted in the rescue.
