Reports of a man with a gun led to a police chase on Alice Court shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Officers responded to a gun call on the first block of Bernie Lane and received a description of the suspect. They found Maurice Cheaton hiding behind pine trees near a basketball court. Police said Cheaton, 20, of Delmar Mitchell Drive, fled behind buildings along Michigan Avenue.

While running on Michigan, police said, Cheaton threw a clear plastic bag of crack cocaine. When police apprehended him on the first block of Bennett Lane, they said they found Cheaton was carrying marijuana. They also said they found a Taurus Ultra-Lite .38 black handgun, which was loaded with five rounds, on Alice Court, where Cheaton was seen hiding before the chase.

The gun is listed as stolen out of Pennsylvania.

Cheaton was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, obstructing governmental administration, criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.
