U.S. Army veteran Sergeant Benjamin Benally received the Purple Heart for combat injuries sustained while serving in Afghanistan today.
The presentation by U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins took place at 1 p.m. at the VA Western New York Healthcare System on Bailey Avenue, Buffalo.
While in Afghanistan, Benally’s vehicle struck an IED and he suffered injuries to his arm and head. He was later diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury.
The Purple Heart is awarded to soldiers who have been injured or killed as a result of hostile actions while serving in the U.S. Armed Services.
