A local group’s campaign against human trafficking has received $500,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The International Institute of Buffalo said the new support reflects the need for services by an increasing number of identified victims across the region.

The money will go toward fighting sex and labor trafficking of foreign nationals and U.S. citizens, male and female, adults and children, by funding trafficking investigations, increasing awareness of trafficking crimes and supporting victims once they’re identified.

By own its estimate, the institute has helped more than 400 trafficking victims over the past six years.
