A Buffalo man attempting to import untaxed cigarettes from North Carolina was arrested Thursday, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office said.
Following an investigation by New York State Cigarette Task Force members, Erie County sheriff’s deputies stopped a vehicle driven by Hamid Thompson, 43, on the Thruway in Brant, as he returned from North Carolina.
Authorities found 200 cartons of untaxed Newport cigarettes in duffel bags in the trunk. Also found on the suspect, authorities said, was identification for Hamid Sylvester, the subject of a cigarette-related arrest warrant issued in Virginia.
Thompson was charged with possessing and transporting untaxed cigarettes, fourth-degree criminal tax fraud and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was being held at the Erie County Holding Center pending arraignment.
