The editorial cartoons of Pulitzer Prize-winning Buffalo News artist Bruce Shanks will be the subject of free lectures at 1:30 p.m. Monday in SUNY Buffalo State’s Butler Library and at noon Tuesday in the Central Library on Lafayette Square in downtown Buffalo.
The programs, “Politics of Yesterday and Today,” will discuss Shanks’ satirical commentary on events during his career at The News from 1951 to 1974 and how they relate to today’s issues. Shanks died in 1980.
They will be presented by Nicky Kondziela, who is earning a master’s degree in history at Buffalo State with a concentration on museum studies. She received a research fellowship this summer to study the Central Library’s collection of Shanks’ original cartoons.
