Bird Island Pier, the popular fishing and walking destination in the Niagara River, will open to the public today after three years of rehabilitation.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the city of Buffalo and the Niagara Greenway Commission collaborated on $1.5 million in repairs to the pier. Damage to the pier was discovered during an inspection in August 2010.

The pier allows boats to navigate the Black Rock Channel while avoiding Niagara River currents, and also allows for public recreation.
