PITTSFORD — Rookie Marquise Goodwin was the receiver of the night at the Buffalo Bills’ intrasquad scrimmage Monday.

Goodwin, a third-round pick from the University of Texas, caught three passes for 87 yards.

He caught a 45-yard bomb down the right sideline from Jeff Tuel to the 5-yard line. Cornerback T.J. Heath had reasonable coverage, but Goodwin showed good body control to adjust to the pass at the last second.

Tuel hit Goodwin for a 27-yard gain down the right sideline to convert a fourth-and-7 situation in the two-minute drill for the second-string offense against the first-string defense. Goodwin made a leaping grab amid two defenders.

Goodwin was timed in 4.27 seconds in the 40-yard dash and finished 10th in the 2012 London Olympics in the long jump.

“When we first got him obviously we all knew about the speed,” coach Doug Marrone said. “I don’t know about the consistency of the hands prior to getting him. I’ll tell you what, I think if you said what’s the one thing you’ve seen from him that maybe you haven’t seen in the college film, I think he’s been much more consistent with his hands in really making some tough catches. He’s been doing that through the camp.”

Quarterback Kevin Kolb was not in attendance, which allowed third-stringer Tuel to split the snaps with EJ Manuel.

Kolb was excused from practice due to a death in the family. Marrone said indications were Kolb would have been able to return to practice Monday night. He missed practice Saturday and Sunday due to “tweaking” his left knee in a slip at the start of Saturday’s session.

Seven other Bills nursing injuries or coming back from injuries sat out the practice. They were Stevie Johnson, Kevin Elliott, Justin Rogers, Duke Williams, Chris Hairston and Mike Caussin. Defensive linemen Kyle Williams and Mario Williams and tight end Scott Chandler took part only in individual drills, not the live scrimmage.

Three players suffered what appeared to be minor injuries during the scrimmage. They were linebacker Keith Pough (chest), defensive tackle Aaron Tipoti (ankle) and running back Zack Brown (rib).

Running back Kendall Gaskins, an undrafted free agent out of Richmond, showed some hard running. Gaskins is a 6-foot-1, 238-pounder who scored 38 touchdowns in his college career.

“I thought he looked good,” Marrone said. “I would say that he did a nice job out there today. I think you saw a little bit more of him out there than you probably did in the practices. Now we gotta make sure we’re getting that type of play out of the practices. I thought he did run well and he did run low.”

Rookie place-kicker Dustin Hopkins boomed a 52-yard field goal that was good by probably 10 yards. Hopkins also made 25- and 26-yard field goals. Veteran Rian Lindell was short on a 53-yard try. He made a 26-yarder.
