Beilein, Tara get new deals

Two highly successful college basketball coaches with Western New York ties, Michigan men’s coach John Beilein and Stanford women’s coach Tara VanDerveer, have signed contract extensions with their respective schools.

Beilein, the Niagara County native and former Canisius College coach, received a three-year extension that replaces his previous contract and keeps him with the Wolverines through the 2018-19 season. The 60-year-old Beilein will make $2.45 million a year in total compensation.

The Wolverines lost to Louisville in the NCAA title game in April. Beilein’s previous contract extension kept him under contract through 2015-16.

Michigan hired Beilein, 60, in March 2007, a week after he led West Virginia to the NIT championship. Beilein, whose coaching career started at Erie Community College, has a career record of 673-403.

VanDerveer, also 60, said Wednesday she signed a new deal but did not offer specifics. The Buffalo Seminary graduate had two years remaining on her previous contract, through the 2014-15 season. The Cardinal missed reaching a sixth straight Final Four in VanDerveer’s 27th season at Stanford and 34th overall as a Division I head coach. She has a 742-152 Stanford record and a 894-203 won-loss record for her career.
