Nearly 200 young people from 17 Buffalo and Erie County Public Libraries will compete in the 16th annual Battle of the Books at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 2 in the gym on the Erie Community College South Campus in Orchard Park.

The teams of readers, all entering sixth through ninth grade in September, will be tested on five children’s books they read during the summer by answering trivia questions. Last year the Clarence Public Library won the Gold Medal in a lightning round witnessed by 500 fans.

The books include “The Sixty-Eight Rooms” by Marianne Malone, “Into the Wild (Warriors Book 1)” by Erin Hunter, the Newbery Medal-winning “Dead End in Norvelt” by Jack Gantos, “Peak” by Roland Smith and “The White Giraffe” by Lauren St. John.
