The treasurer of the Oakfield Fire Department was arrested Tuesday for allegedly misappropriating more than $6,000 of the department’s funds, according to the State Comptroller’s Office.
State Police arrested Samantha Hilchey, 31, of Batavia, and charged her with third-degree grand larceny, a class D felony, the Office of Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli said in a release.
An audit and investigation showed Hilchey made more than $6,000 in unauthorized transactions with department funds, including paying her personal utility bills and making cash withdrawls, DiNapoli said.
She was arraigned in Batavia town court and is due back in court on July 7.
The audit is expected to be finalized in the coming months, said DiNapoli, who noted department officials helped bring the situation to light.
