BATAVIA -- Genesee Community College will expand its student housing with a groundbreaking ceremony at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the College Village adjacent complex.
Two buildings will house 64 students in 11,000 square feet of garden-type apartments with a common space for social activities. The estimated cost is $2.8 million and is the first addition to housing in six years.
Most units will accommodate four students in single bedrooms and two bathrooms. Completion is slated for fall of next year.
The College Foundation oversees the nine-building complex that with the new apartments will house 453 students. This year GCC received 572 applications for housing.
Community colleges as a rule do not provide housing for students because of financial implications.
GCC Foundation, a separate corporation took over College Village from a private firm in 2001.
