BATAVIA – Police Chief Sean Heubusch in his first year is encouraging officers to resume foot and bike patrols.

It’s part of an expanding Community Neighborhood Policing program that is sporadic, limited and voluntary but with a goal to have a cop on the beat at some time in every part of the city.

Heubusch is encouraging officers to walk the streets day and night and mingle with residents. Those on foot patrol take notes of possible problems, including code violations, illegal and suspicious activity.

The chief called walking the beat a “time-honored tradition that was lost to modern technology with patrol cars, computers and quick communications.
