A Batavia man accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend in front of her children and grandfather and then fleeing from authorities Sunday night was arrested early Monday when he returned to her Newstead home, according to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

Eric M. Chiddy, 36, had managed to elude deputies Sunday night despite a car chase and extensive search that involved the sheriff’s helicopter and a K-9 unit, Sheriff Timothy B. Howard said. But at about 6 a.m. Monday, Chiddy returned a second time to the Rapids Road home and was taken into custody by Deputy Brandon Stott with assistance from state police.

Chiddy was charged with assault, burglary, criminal possession of a knife, endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest, menacing, obstruction of governmental administration and disobeying an order of protection barring him from visiting the former girlfriend.
