Grinch Day at the old Aurora Movie Theatre on Main Street in East Aurora is just one of the new, slightly offbeat Saturday holiday happenings in business districts throughout Western New York today – from Santa’s arrival by helicopter in Lewiston to live reindeer at the newly reopened Williamsville Water Mill and a new Dr.Seuss-inspired, Whoville-style celebration complete with costume contest in Clarence Center from 2 to 5 p.m.
• In Williamsville, Sweet Jenny’s will be selling its ice cream in the historic water mill near where reindeer and free hot chocolate will be available before the tree-lighting ceremony that starts at 6 p.m. The events follow a day of festivities along Main Street.
• In Lewiston, Santa will descend by helicopter at Academy Park at 11:30 a.m. and then head down Center Street to join the mix of weekend-long events that include free horse-drawn carriage rides.
• In Clarence Center, new off-the-wall Christmas efforts are intended to attract attention and serve to charm and thank loyal customers, said Linda Carpenter, owner of Yours Truly paperie and gift shop, a member of Meet in the Center Merchants Association.
“We’re talking cute, major, major cute,” she said. “Everything’s free ... We’re kind of ‘Whoville’ people.”
