The pastor of the largest Catholic parish in Western New York has been named the new head of Christ the King Seminary in Aurora.
The Rev. Joseph C. Gatto, pastor of St. Gregory the Great Church in Amherst, will become president and rector of the seminary on June 1, 2014, succeeding the Rev. Peter J. Drilling. Bishop Richard J. Malone, chairman of the Christ the King Seminary trustees, made the announcement Monday.
Gatto, a Dunkirk native who was ordained to the priesthood in 1983, has served as pastor of St. Gregory the Great since 2006. His final day at the parish will be Jan. 1.
Drilling has been the seminary’s president and rector since 2008. He will return to teaching following a sabbatical. The seminary trains men for the Catholic priesthood, and provides theological education for men and women of other faith backgrounds.
