Ellicott Creek firefighters faced with temperatures hovering near zero responded this morning to a fire in the Raintree Island Apartments, Town of Tonawanda police said.

Town dispatchers received a call shortly after 8 a.m. for a smell of smoke in the apartment building, police said. Firefighters extinguished the fire and town fire investigators were brought in to determine the cause, which is still unknown, officials said.

No injuries were reported, though a cat died in the blaze, police said. The Red Cross was notified and responded to assist residents displaced by the fire, police said.

Several other apartments in the building were also damaged by smoke and water, though officials did not have an estimate of the damage.
