A standoff inside an Amherst hotel ended peacefully Friday morning, after a man was taken into custody and sent to Erie County Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.
Police were called at about 8 a.m. Friday to the Super 8 Hotel at 7200 Transit Road, near Main Street, to check on the welfare of a despondent man staying at the hotel, said Amherst Assistant Chief Charles Cohen.
Officers responded, knocked on his hotel door and tried to persuade the man to come out of the room. He refused.
At one point, the man indicated he had a gun, which prompted police to evacuate neighboring rooms and call in an emergency response team, Cohen said.
A hostage negotiator talked to the middle-aged man off and on for about two hours, before he finally agreed to come out of the hotel room at around 11:30 a.m. Friday, Cohen said.
Police didn’t find a weapon in the room.
