ROYALTON – Traci A. Storms, 40, of Gasport has been identified as the woman killed Thursday when her car went through a stop sign and was struck by a dump truck at the intersection of Slayton Settlement and Orangeport roads shortly after 8 a.m. The Niagara County Sheriff’s Department released her name this morning.
Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies determined that a southbound car traveling on Orangeport Road failed to stop for the stop sign at Slayton Settlement.
Once in the intersection, the car was struck by an eastbound dump truck. Both vehicles went off the roadway and veered off the southeast corner of intersection after the impact, striking a tree, deputies said.
Storms was pronounced dead at the scene.
David E. Webster, 36, of Lockport, the driver of the dump truck was taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport for treatment of minor injuries.
Gasport Chemical Hose, Wrights Corners and Terry’s Corners fire companies and Tri Town Ambulance also responded.
Because the car was so heavily damaged, firefighters at first were uncertain if there was more than one person in the car and had to cautiously cut apart the flattened vehicle with the jaws-of-law apparatus, according to witnesses at the scene.
Not only did the dump truck crush the vehicle, but it appeared that its contents spilled atop a section of the car. Niagara County District 3 Coroner Kenneth V. Lederhouse of Lockport was summoned to the scene by sheriff’s deputies and state troopers also assisted.
