Alden residents interested in learning about the inner-workings of Mercy Flight will have the chance next weekend, when Crittenden Volunteer Fire Department holds its inaugural Community Day.

The event starts at noon on Saturday and goes until 3 p.m. at the fire department, 13415 Genesee St. The Mercy Flight helicopter is scheduled to land around 12:30 p.m., and a crew member will speak about the ins and outs of the operation, said Lynn O’Donnell, EMS captain and public relations coordinator with the Crittenden Volunteer Fire Department.

“We want to educate the public about Mercy Flight and the fire department,” she said.

Free hot dogs and soda will be provided, O’Donnell said, and other fire departments will be involved as well.

“This is the first time we’ve invited other organizations,” she said. “We’re trying something new.”

A donation “bucket” will be available for those interested in donating to Mercy Flight, O’Donnell said.
