Lefty Bill Sulkowski (Orchard Park) pitched the distance and Matt Sokolski (Iroquois) led the attack with a solo home run to lead West Seneca Post 735 to the championship round of the New York State American Legion Baseball Tournament in Utica with a 9-3 victory over the Middletown Cobras in an elimination game.

West Seneca (3-1) avenged its 6-0 opening loss in the tournament against Middletown and will meet Smith Post of Rome (3-1) at 11 a.m. today at Murnane Field. The winner will face Clinton County Mariners (3-1) for the championship.

Again West Seneca struck early, taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning. In Friday’s 10-0 win over Melvin Roads, the Western New York champion took a 6-0 first-inning lead, four runs coming on a grand slam by Alex Pacer (West Seneca East).

Saturday, Pacer had two hits including a two-run double in the first inning. Paul Wujek (West Seneca East) went 3 for 3 and scored twice. Sulkowski, Ian Allen (East Aurora) and Mike Prentice (St. Francis) had two hits each in the 12-hit attack.

Middletown managed 10 hits against Sulkowski, but left seven runners on base.
