LOCKPORT – John J. Ben of Lockport’s Holland Land Title & Abstract Co. announced Friday he’s running for town justice.
Ben said he was chosen to run by the committee of vacancies listed on former candidate William R. Fish’s nominating petitions.
Fish, a retired state trooper, quit the race July 15, within the time frame for his supporters to name an alternative candidate.
Ben, who has a law degree and was admitted to the California bar, has never practiced law, instead working in the real estate title abstract field.
He’s running against Councilwoman Cheryl A. Antkowiak, the endorsed Republican candidate, in GOP, Democratic and Working Families party primaries.
Ben, an enrolled Working Families member, ran for town justice in 2001 but lost to Raymond E. Schilling, who is retiring at the end of this year. Ben’s wife, Sandra L. Ben, ran unsuccessfully for coroner in 2005 and 2009.
