Agencies will offer Secure Your ID Day

Story tools:

The Better Business Bureau and Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Buffalo are hoping to stem the rise in identity crime with a free identity theft prevention event.

Secure Your ID Day will be held at Erie Community College’s North Campus in Amherst from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. Saturday. Consumers can request free copies of their credit reports, bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to be shredded and obtain tips on identity protection.

Complaints of identity theft filed by Buffalo Niagara residents to the Federal Trade Commission rose by nearly 18 percent in 2008, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
