INSTALLS lands DTV contract
A local technology installation company has landed the largest of several government contracts intended to assist consumers with the upcoming transition to digital television.
Buffalo-headquartered INSTALLS Inc. announced Monday it was awarded a $3 million contract by the Federal Communications Commission to help underserved populations as they prepare for the June 12 transition from analog broadcasting to digital.
“For the company it’s a major milestone as we look to expand our commercial and government service capability. Those are two newer business segments for us, and two we’ve been successful with thus far,” said John Nettina, Chief Operating Officer for INSTALLS Inc.
The contract has allowed the company to hire five people to work as corporate dispatchers on a temporary basis until the program is completed June 30. Depending on volume, the company may temporarily hire an additional 10 dispatchers. The company has another 40 full-time, permanent technician positions open nationwide.
Under the contract, INSTALLS Inc. will provide free basic assistance to more than 35,000 consumers in 35 states. Contractors will install up to two television and antenna converter boxes in each home, assure the boxes are working properly and receiving the appropriate channels, and provide instruction on using the boxes.
Installs Inc. is also authorized to provide expert in-home services, performing substantial adjustments such as moving antennas and advanced VCR set-up. Contractors can also sell equipment to consumers if the devices consumers have are faulty. All sales must fall within government price guidelines.
The program is generally aimed at the elderly, people with disabilities, people who do not speak English and those living in far-flung rural areas.
Installs, Inc. services a number of high-profile companies such as Sony, Dell, DirecTV and the National Football League. The company also manages field technician teams for other companies including Best Buy’s Geek Squad.
