Tech issues limit access to money for HSBC patrons
Customers of HSBC Bank USA found themselves unable to transact much business with the bank Monday, as unknown technical problems apparently shut down access to the bank’s Web site and prevented withdrawals of more than $500.
“HSBC experienced a systems issue, impacting certain applications within the U. S. bank,” the Delaware-based bank said in a statement late in the afternoon.
The bank said that “when necessary,” its staff handled “certain customer transactions” in branches to “minimize interruption of service.”
However, that wasn’t always what customers found. Some found they couldn’t get into their accounts online. Others, like Scott Hahn of Lancaster, said they were unable to get money out when they went into a branch.
Hahn, 33, said he needed to cash a check so he’d have money for a home improvement project and back-to-school shopping. He’s trying to avoid credit cards.
But when he went to an HSBC branch in Depew at noon, tellers told him they couldn’t withdraw or cash more than $500.
He asked his wife to return several hours later, but the problem had not been resolved.
“I’m unable to finish what I need to do because I cannot get an amount larger than $500 out,” he complained.
HSBC said many of the affected systems were up and running by early evening, and “we continue to work through the remaining system recovery.”
