The United Way of Buffalo and Erie County’s mission is: “We bring people, organizations, and resources together to improve community well-being.”

For almost a century, the nonprofit has orchestrated a communitywide pooling of resources to benefit various causes, impacting education, income and health and wellness.

Its 2013 campaign raised $14.3 million. The agency, which was established in 1917, funds 86 programs, including American Red Cross Disaster Services and the WNY 2-1-1 call center. Its annual revenues are $17 million.

The agency employs 54 people, some of whom participated in the survey and described their work as fulfilling.

“I love my job because we are able to assist so many in the community and it is rewarding,” one employee wrote. “As an employee I am able to explore and participate in activities that will help individuals of all ages and economic backgrounds.”

Workers also praised management and the teamwork atmosphere.

“Best manager I’ve had in my career,” an employee wrote. “Great peers and a great subordinate team.”

Another employee said: “I love my job because I get to help people for a living. There is nothing better than that. We are able to take on other projects besides what our main job is and use our creative minds to complete them.”
