Sen. Charles E. Schumer is urging the federal government to restore funding that impacts a local research and development firm.

Schumer wants at least $9 million restored to the budget of the Department of Defense’s Science and Tech Program, which has a contract with CUBRC.

CUBRC, a Cheektowaga-based, operates the unique Large Energy National Shock Tunnel for the testing of hypersonic weapon systems for the military, which relies on the Department of Defense for funding.

Schumer urged Senate Appropriators to restore funding for the Test and Evaluation/Science and Technology program in the next Defense Appropriations bill. In recent years, the T&E/S&T budget has decreased by almost 10 percent from $93 million to $83 million. Schumer said the cuts could the hurt CUBRC renowned LENS facility and the company’s 130 jobs. He is pushing for funding to return to at least $92.6 million for fiscal year 2015.
