The push to install a new traffic signal and an access lane on Route 5 near a vacant stretch of land being eyed as a distribution site for FedEx is getting a boost from U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer.

The New York Democrat has written to federal and state highway officials urging them to speed up their review of the request for a new traffic signal and access lane near the 129-acre parcel of town-owned land on the east side of Route 5, near Bayview Road.

Those reviews, which require traffic pattern studies that normally can take up to a year, could drive away potential tenants from the redevelopment site because of concerns about traffic flow along a busy stretch of Route 5, Schumer said in a statement Monday.

The Town of Hamburg and the Hamburg Industrial Development Agency both have endorsed the proposal to install a new traffic signal and access lane that would connect the entrance of the industrial site directly to Route 5.
