From the core of downtown Buffalo to the outer suburbs, Western New York is hopping with new construction and development activity – the likes of which hasn’t been seen in decades.
More than $1.7 billion is being invested in new development projects throughout the region, ranging from new Medical Campus facilities and Canalside buildings to hotels and office buildings in Amherst, Niagara Falls and Jamestown.
The vast majority of activity is in the City of Buffalo, but it’s not all downtown. And that $1.7 billion estimate by no means captures every single project under way or planned.
Every major private developer is taking part in the construction, along with many of the smaller players. And while institutional dollars – from the University at Buffalo or the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus – make up about a third of the dollars being spent, the rest of the money and 90 percent of the projects involve private money.
That demonstrates how widespread and broad-based the new development has become. And it shows how much everyone wants a piece of the pie.
This map highlights some of the big projects in the works.
