New Era Cap will temporarily lay off about 60 workers at its Derby plant within the next two weeks. The company plans to hire them all back in a few weeks, union and company officials said.
“This temporary layoff is not uncommon as we wind down the end of the year,” said Paul Murphy, senior public relations manager for New Era, in an e-mail.
A union official was told a project with a major sports league fell through, forcing the company to reduce its workforce of about 200 by 30 percent. Debora Hayes, Upstate New York’s area director for the CWA, said she was notified Thursday morning by a New Era executive about the pending, temporary layoffs.
“We hope everyone can return to work after the Thanksgiving holiday,” she said.
